Where and When?
We were lucky that Hugo’s birthday fell on a Saturday. We love inviting friends and family for a get together on Ruby’s birthday but that’s in August and we’re usually lucky with the weather, having held barbecues at our house for the last few years. But Hugo’s birthday being April in the UK meant the weather could go either way.
The house just isn’t big enough to accommodate everybody and we didn’t fancy hiring anywhere indoors so we came up with the idea of a bear hunt. We call Hugo ‘Huggy Bear’ and so this seemed quite apt.
We love walking at Newport Wetlands Reserve, run by the RSPB at the mouth of the River Usk and thought this would be a great place to hunt for bears. You can find it here.
Although there’s a cafe at the centre, we decided to hire the education classroom as base in case it rained and if not, we knew it would be a great place to leave bags and other bits and bobs.
Teddy Bear Theme
To stay with the theme of teddy bears, we asked everyone to bring along a teddy-bear’s picnic, to be eaten inside or out, weather dependent.
I found some gorgeous bears from last year’s stock on-line at House of Fraser. They had 2017 embroidered on the paw, which was the year Hugo was born. They were reduced from £12 each to £2; an absolute bargain, and also in place of party bags, which would have probably cost more per child. You can find the bears here. (Not sure for how long)
The day couldn’t have gone better. The sun came out and it was a wonderful day to remember. In total, 50 bear-hunters came along and we were able to play all afternoon once all the bears were found and being cuddled by their new owners.
We must say a huge thank you to Ruby and her friends, who ran ahead to hide the teddies. They did a fantastic job.
Thank you so much to everyone who came and made the day so special for us all.
